Although small, cigarette butts are a big problem.

In the water, the toxic chemicals the cigarette filters were designed to trap, can leak out into aquatic ecosystems threatening the quality of the water and many aquatic lifeforms.

The risk to wildlife is significant and it is not uncommon to find cigarette butts in the stomachs of fish, birds, whales and other marine creatures who have mistaken them for food.

An estimated 32 billion cigarette butts are discarded in Australia every year

Cigarette butts take years to decompose as the filters are made of cellulose acetate, a type of plastic.

For and Against Providing Cigarette Bins

One consensus in Australia at the moment is that if you do not provide cigarette bins for butts then you are assisting the push to stop smoking.

If we take a logical look at this issue we can see that it makes complete sense to provide cigarette bins or personal ashtrays for butts. We provide bins for all of our other rubbish, and we certainly don't condone throwing rubbish on the ground and walking away, so why do we think its ok to not provide bins or ashtrays for cigarette butts or allow smokers to just thrown them on the ground.......
